For Kei Kawamura, a home represents more than a place to live. It represents a future he fought hard to create for his son.

Kei’s life has been shaped by challenges that could have defined his story. Born to a mother struggling with addiction, he experienced instability early in life and later faced difficult seasons of his own. After years of searching for a different path, Kei made the decision to get sober and rebuild his life.

For the past 13 years, he has remained committed to his recovery, attending daily meetings and working to create a better future for himself and his son, Tamon.

Three years ago, Kei and Tamon returned to California with hopes of starting fresh. Kei opened a tattoo business in Lompoc, but shortly after arriving, he experienced a violent attack that left him recovering from a stabbing injury.

With nowhere else to go, father and son lived in the back of the tattoo shop, sleeping on a cement floor.

When Tamon was referred to People Helping People for counseling, PHP brought together a team of support around the family. The first priority was helping them find stable housing.

Through PHP’s housing support services, Kei and Tamon were able to apply for an affordable home at Polo Village.

For Kei, the opportunity almost seemed too good to be true.

He didn’t fully believe they had a permanent home until the day he received the keys.

“That was mind-blowing,” he said.

For Tamon, the impact was even more personal.

“My son wanted to feel normal,” Kei shared. “And having a room makes him feel normal.”

Today, Tamon is thriving. The high school student is focused on his education, studying robotics, playing sports, and dreaming of attending Cal Poly to become an engineer.

With stability beneath them, Kei is continuing to work, pursue new opportunities, and look for ways to give back to others who are facing difficult circumstances.

“What PHP donors are doing is not only offering hope to people coming from much more difficult backgrounds,” Kei said. “That impact carries much further than you think. By offering a home, by offering stability, you’re breaking up crime cycles. You’re helping break generational curses.”

A safe home changed what was possible for Kei and Tamon.

It gave a father peace. It gave a son room to dream. And it created the stability needed for a new future to begin.
