BENEFICIARIES
People Helping People is proud to be the fiscal sponsor for V-Day Santa Ynez Valley. People Helping People’s Advocates for Domestic and Child Abuse Prevention (ADCAP) program is the only domestic violence intervention/protection program serving the Santa Ynez Valley. Trained and certified Advocates are on-call twenty-four hours, seven days a week to respond to Sheriff’s calls to the scenes of domestic violence crimes. Immediate support may include medical attention and shelter. Further support can include help with basic needs such as food and rental assistance, direction to successfully navigate the criminal justice system, group and individual counseling for adults and children, and access to services from the District Attorney’s Victim Witness Program. In 2006, ADCAP served 200 individuals via its Emergency Response Team at crime sites in partnership with the Santa Barbara Country Sheriff’s Department. In 2007, 65 families and 140 individuals were served by the ADCAP program.
The Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo was founded by Dr. Denis Mukwege Mukengere to treat victims of a rape epidemic characterized by a level of brutality called "the worst in the world" by John Holmes, United Nations Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs. Since 1996, sexual violence against women and children in the Congo has been used to torture and humiliate women and girls and destroy families. UNICEF estimates that hundreds of thousands of women and girls have been raped. On average, ten new victims arrive at Panzi Hospital every day. In addition to the severe psychological damage, sexual violence leaves many survivors with genital lesions, traumatic fistulae and other permanent physical wounds, as well as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
City of Joy, a project of Panzi Hospital in partnership with V-Day and UNICEF is a planned refuge for healed survivors of rape and torture who have been left without family and community. City of Joy will offer a safe haven, providing educational and income-generating opportunities so these women can rebuild their lives.
